Gm 8: +/- Player Analysis - Stetson Edition

Welcome back to another addition of the +/- Player Analysis for your 2011-2012 Indiana Hoosiers! This was a story of two halves today in Assembly Hall.  IU came out into the game lethargic and nonchalant which allowed the Hatters of Stetson to hang close at the half.  Coach Crean did some lineup adjustments at the half; only returning 2 starters, to start the second half.  This was only the second time this year Coach has opted to start the second half with a different lineup than he did in the first half.  The insertion of Daniel Moore, Will Sheehey and Derek Elston proved to do the trick as the Hoosiers ended with a 84-50 victory.

Key Players:

  • Cody Zeller -STAT SHEET STUFFER! It is becoming rather difficult to find compliments for this kid that haven't previously been mentioned. Cody had another outstanding game leading the team in Points, Rebounds, Blocks and Steals. Every game Cody appears in the Key Players list as he has been pivotal to the Hoosiers' success this year.  When Cody has his first bad game... he will still appear in the key players section!
  • Victor Oladipo -When he isn't performing flashy dunks, he is putting the ball into the net in a very efficient manner.  Oladipo shot 6-8 from the field and wowed the crowd with some very athletic plays.
  • Jordan Hulls -Hulls had a great game form a +/- perspective, but he needed a little fire lit underneath from Coach Crean to really get that going.  Hulls was a key starter missing from that second half lineup.  He was the first guy in the game during second half play, but it sure appeared Coach Crean was sending a message.
With that being said, let's jump into the +/- Player Analysis

+/- Player Analysis vs Stetson
*Just in case you forgot, here is a quick breakdown as to what the +/- Player Analysis is looking at.
Example: Here is a quick example of how the +/- stat is determined. Zeller, Watford, VJIII, Hulls and Sheehey start the game for IU. Therefore the score is 0-0. Coach Crean makes his first substitution at 15:00 with the score IU up 15-10. Oladipo comes into the game for Sheehey. For this stint in time, Sheehey would earn a +5 (while Sheehey was in, IU increased their lead by 5 points). The Lineup of Zeller, Watford, VJIII, Hulls and Sheehey also earned a +5. This will continue throughout the game.

Game Overall

First Half Only

Whole Game
 Key Takeaways:

  • Jordan Hulls - Hulls didn't start the second half, which appeared to be a message from Coach Crean.  Judging from the breakdown of the first half and the overall game, Hulls took his 0.38pts/min in the first half and increased it all the way to 1.25pts/min in the second half.  This was a significant increase in a per minute average.  The same can be said for Cody Zeller and Verdell Jones.
  • Daniel Moore - Moore started the second half for the Hoosiers and provided a nice spark.  Moore described his role as needing to be a spark for the team; he achieved that again this evening.
  • I cannot stress this enough, anything in the GREEN, means the player had a positive impact on the game and helped IU get to their blowout win.

Lineups of the Night:

Key Takeaways: (click to enlarge)
  • Here you can see the game flow throughout the night. The chart reads from the beginning of the game to the end from top to bottom.
  • The game got close again right before half time as the Hatters beat our last 3 lineups used going +5 vs them to pull within 5 at the half.
  • The second half was a different story.  IU came right out of the gate a +7 and over the first five groups of the second half, went +23.
  • Overall, Coach Crean used 21 different combinations of players in the game Of his 21 combinations,  11 were positive, 5 were neutral (0) and the remaining 5 were negative.
  • Only one unit played multiple times tonight (compared to 6 lineups for the NC State game)
Best Lineup of the Night:
The best lineup of the night (+9) belongs to Hulls, Oladipo, VJIII, Watford and Zeller. If you have been following this analysis, you will know this is by far Crean's favorite lineup.  This unit played 3 different times throughout the night. They did their mostly all of their damage at the 15 minute mark of the second half where they went +11.  The other two times they played together they went 0 to start the game and -2 later in the first half.

Worst Lineup of the Night:
There were 5 lineups that went negative tonight.  Two lineups went -2 and the others went -1.  Therefore, there isn't any useful reason to point out which lineups went negative.  If you really need to know, refer to the chart above!

Season to Date:
As many people like to point out, looking at the +/- for one specific game is not entirely telling. Tracking this over the course of the year, will give a much clearer picture as to what each player brings to the team. Below is the updated season to date +/- for each player.

  • Zeller is doing his best to get over the 1.0pts/min mark.  Another solid contribution from him tonight increased his season totals to 0.91 pts/min.
  • With the exception of Moore, from top-down, it accurately shows the best players on the team and who is getting the most minutes.  That makes sense considering Coach Crean looks at Plus/Minus data when analyzing lineups!
Lineup Combinations
Here are some quick stats related to the Lineups Tom Crean has used through the three regular season games:
  • Coach has used 125 different lineups this year.
  • Of those 125, only 38 are negative year to date. (Increased by 4 this game)
  • Best lineup is +46 (Also tonight's Best Lineup. Crean's favorite unit (19 times) of Hulls, Oladipo, VJ3, Watford, Zeller)
  • 2nd Best Lineup is +24 (only played in 5 games, 8 times total. Consists of Hulls, Oladipo, Sheehey, Watford and Zeller)
  • Worst lineup is -6. (Consists of Hulls, Watford, VJIII, Sheehey and Prtichard.  This lineup went -5 vs NC State last week.)
  • Zeller is now in the 15 best lineups for the year.
  • 28 lineups have been used multiple times this year.
Lineup Creator!
Here is your chance to play Coach Crean!
What you can do is go to this link, "+/- Lineup Generator" and it will open an Excel file for you. Using the filters already on the page, you can filter the lineups for the year to see how all the different combinations of players play together.

For instance, if you wanted to see how the team does when Oladipo and Sheehey are in the game together, filter both their columns. This will return all lineups for the year that Oladipo and Sheehey have been on the floor together!

Overall
This was a frustrating game for the fans (just finding a place to watch it!), mixed with the first half of uninspired play.  On a day where the 1987 National Championship returned to Bloomington, IU switched their play in the second half to mirror that of a NCAA Tournament team.  IU did what was needed and took care of business.  Now they get to work all week on knocking off the #1 Team in the Nation... The Kentucky Wildcats.  This game is going to be a great challenge for our Hoosiers.  If you thought the NC State game was a big win... just wait!
