Welcome back to the first addition of +/- Player Analysis. The purpose of this analysis is to see the overall effect players have on the game. These statistics, do have variables that come into play which can alter certain player's +/-. Over the course of the season, I think we will see which players really bring the intangibles to the game and help IU win. That being said, let's jump into the stats!
Example: Here is a quick example of how the +/- stat is determined. Zeller, Watford, VJIII, Hulls and Sheehey start the game for IU. Therefore the score is 0-0. Coach Crean makes his first substitution at 15:00 with the score IU up 15-10. Oladipo comes into the game for Sheehey. For this stint in time, Sheehey would earn a +5 (while Sheehey was in, IU increased their lead by 5 points). The Lineup of Zeller, Watford, VJIII, Hulls and Sheehey also earned a +5. This will continue throughout the game.
Overall:What this means:
- Above you can see the +/- broken down by time on the court. From this we can see that Daniel Moore actually provided the largest spark for the team while on the court. Moore's +1.22 pts/min means for every minute he was on the court, IU outscored UIndy by 1.22pts.
- Oladipo - VO played 20 minutes and had cumulative +/- of (-4). You might look at this and say "Wow did VO have a bad game?" This isn't the correct way to look at these stats. The important thing with these stats is to view the overall production over the season. I also like the chart below about lineups, which I think will serve a very cool statistic.
One important role of the coach is to determine which lineups are working the best. For The chart below shows the different Lineups Crean used during the game. In total, 22 different lineups were used in the game. There were 25 different stints of lineups. Here are the lineups in Chronological Order of game time.
What this means:
- The unit on the left hand side shows team on the floor. (All players initials)
- The chart on the right breaks out who was on the floor for that stint.
- The Points, shows the +/- for that unit while on the floor together.
The best lineup of the night belongs to Moore, VJIII, Watford, Elston and Zeller. While on the floor together, they produced a +/- of 7!
Worst Lineup of the Night:
The worst lineup of the night was a tie between Hulls, VJIII, Oladipo, Sheehey, Zeller and VJIII, Roth, Oladipo, Elston and Pritchard. While on the floor together, they produced a +/- of (-5).
Continued Stats:
I will continue to post these stats the day after each game. Over the course of the year I think we will see some very interesting things. It might also allow us to see how Crean makes his lineup rotations, as he has mentioned many times the importance he places on +/-.
We'll be back next Friday for Stony Brook!
