Around the Big Ten

By Logan Harper

Welcome to another week of “Around the Big Ten.” A lot happened this past week in the conference, so let’s take a look. Enjoy!

ILLINOIS
The Illini faced a tough road test when they visited the Minnesota Golden Gophers last week. What the Illini found in Minneapolis was a new found surge in offense, as Mike Davis and Demetri McCamey both chipped in 17 points as the Illini went on to win the game 71-62. Illinois travelled home to face Purdue on national television on Sunday and were unable to keep the streak going, as they would falter in the second half to lose the contest 81-70. Brandon Paul had 23 points. Illinois will face Michigan at home on Wednesday.

INDIANA
The Hoosiers rolled into West Lafayette looking to prove to the Boilermakers that they are back to competing in the rivalry once again. Three Hoosiers scored in double figures, led by Will Sheehey’s 14, with Jordan Hulls adding 13, and Verdell Jones accounting for 10. The Hoosiers would fail to stay close due to a clear loss at the foul stripe, where the Hoosiers hit 7-7, to Purdue’s 28 attempted free throws, eventually falling 67-53. IU headed to Ann Arbor to face Michigan and was able to rally from a 22-point deficit to cut the Wolverine’s lead to just 3 with minutes to play. Despite the late run, IU dropped their third straight game 73-69. Christian Watford had 14 points. Indiana welcomes Northwestern to Assembly Hall Saturday at 7 ET.

IOWA
Coming off a win against IU, Iowa hosted Wisconsin in a Big Ten battle. Iowa took the Badgers into overtime, before falling 62-59. Bryce Cartwright had 14 points. Iowa would then welcome Minnesota, but despite 11 points from Cartwright, would lose once again 62-45. Iowa will travel to Northwestern on Thursday.

MICHIGAN
Michigan hosted Northwestern at the Crisler Center, and behind a strong career-high 27 points from Jordan Morgan, won the game 75-66. The Wolverines then hosted IU, and despite a late run from the Hoosiers, held on for the win 73-69. Tim Hardaway Jr. had 26 points. Michigan will hit the road to face Illinois Wednesday.

MICHIGAN STATE
Draymond Green became the third MSU player to record a triple-double, logging 15 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in the 75-57 home win over Penn State. Michigan State will face Ohio State in Columbus on Tuesday.

MINNESOTA
Despite 17 points and 16 rebounds from Trevor Mbakwe, Minnesota was unable to defeat the visiting Illini, losing 71-62. Minnesota had some frustrations to take out on Iowa and did just that, winning the contest 62-45 in Iowa City behind a career-high 24 points from Mbakwe. Minnesota will head to Penn State Thursday.

NORTHWESTERN
The Wildcats hit the road to face Michigan in Ann Arbor, but despite 17 points from Michael Thompson and 16 from Drew Crawford, Northwestern was tamed in a 75-66 loss. The Wildcats then faced Penn State on the road and again got dropped 65-41 thanks to cold shooting. JerShon Cobb had 10 points. Northwestern will host Iowa Thursday.

OHIO STATE
To the delight of Hoosier fans across America, Ohio State dropped to 24-1 as they fell on the road to the Wisconsin Badgers 71-67. William Bufford had 21 points in the loss. Ohio State welcomes Michigan State on Tuesday.

PENN STATE
The Lions headed to Michigan State, but got throttled 75-57 despite 19 points from Talor Battle. Penn State headed home to face Northwestern and was able to let off some steam from the thrashing in East Lansing, winning this one 65-41. Battle scored 19 points, becoming the second Big Ten player in the last decade to score 2,000 points (Alando Tucker of Wisconsin). Penn State will host Minnesota on Thursday.

PURDUE
The Boilermakers welcomed IU to Mackey Arena last week, and led by E’Twaun Moore’s 25 points, won 67-53. Purdue then headed to Illinois and pulled off the big road win 81-70 behind JaJuan Johnson’s 24 points. Purdue will host Wisconsin on Wednesday.

WISCONSIN
The Badgers were able to go into Iowa City and survive a scare from Iowa in overtime, pulling off the victory 62-59 behind Jon Leuer’s 19 points. The Badgers then welcomed No. 1 and undefeated Ohio State to the raucous Kohl Center on Saturday and downed the last remaining unbeaten team in the land 71-67. Jordan Taylor scored 21 of his 27 in the second half to rally back from 15 down. Wisconsin will head to Purdue on Wednesday.
